Coral Growing
Being fascinated by the underwater world, I’ve always found corals to be interesting and unique animals. With their sometimes fluorescent colours, they have the amazing power to clean water and fight the effects of pollution by absorbing carbon dioxide.
What got me really interested in them was the amazing scientific breakthrough that they could help treat cancer because of discodermolide, a chemical obtained from a sponge that grows on deep-sea coral reefs. It was suggested, through research, that this chemical could prevent the cells of cancer from dividing and spreading.

In my render, I wanted to touch on the phenomenon called “coral bleaching”, often described as a stress response that corals have when the water is too warm. Coral bleaching is happening more frequently and severely as our oceans are warming due to climate change, hence why my coral has white-ish spots all over it.
